This came from Hotei Wines this week, reporting it as-is...
Dear Hotei Friends,
The Billboard Live jazz club in Tokyo Midtown will be hosting a special
dinner screening of the movie "Bottle Shock" with Japanese subtitles on
Saturday, October 29, 2011. Hayama-sensei will also be giving a short
speech (in Japanese) before the screening where he will elaborate on how
Chateau Montelena's Chardonnay beat the best white wines in France in the
now (in)famous "1976 Paris Tasting", and how in the subsequent 30yrs this
has changed the face of the global wine business. This is the subject of
course of the great movie "Bottle Shock" (the local release with Japanese
subtitles has, oddly, been renamed "Bottle Dream").
The dinner screening includes a full meal and the top red and white wines
from Chateau Montelena, and is sure to be a lot of fun. Please note that
this is a Billboard Live event, so please sign up directly with Billboard
Live (details below). And don't forget to bring the attached coupon for a
discount which is good for up to 4 people.
Many cheers!

Christmas and Oshogatsu are upon us!
'Tis the season of house parties and visiting relatives and vacation days, and all of these positively beg for wine! Vinotokyo has been on the lookout for good deals on wine sets for the holidays, and we have decided to share the best of what we found with you. Each of the sets below come with the Vinotokyo Seal of Approval, so get out there and get you some!
France
First up we have this set from French wines from importer Le Petit Tonneau. Their Holiday Wine Set includes red, white and sparkling wines from Languedoc, the Rhone Valley and Alsace. They're also offering a Sweet Wine Set with a Banyuls (yum!) and a Muscat de Rivesalte.

Pacific Northwest
ORCA International has a lineup of six Hearty Holiday Reds that is sure to add some cheer to the holiday season and includes some Vinotokyo favorites like the McCrea Sirocco and L'Ecole No. 41.
Italy and Austria
Estate Wines is offering a couple of holiday wine sets featuring wines from Austria and Italy. The Jingle Bells Assortment has two reds, two whites and two sparkling wines while the 12 Days of Christmas mixed case has four of each. A little something for everyone!

Japanese exporters may be suffering under the weight of the strong yen, but importers of products such as wine are doing booming business.
"The current exchange rate between the yen and euro means we can purchase a lot more product for the same price," says Moise Cohen, owner of Tokyo-based wine importer Le Petit Tonneau . "Our response is to pass the savings along to our customers in the form of lower prices on our wines."
The Petit Tonneau online wine store specializes in wines from the South of France, and has recently cut prices on all listed wines across the board. Cohen adds, "The stron yen doesn't have to mean just hardship for the Japanese. Imported goods are cheaper than ever before, and Japanese consumers should take advantage of it!"

Not sure if this is a trick you want to try with your premium or older wines, but for some need-it-now Aussie plonk? Probably just fine...

Held on February 25th at the Tokyo Design Center in Gotanda, this event featured 20 importers and over 400 wines. Unlike some other large-scale tastings we've attended recently (particularly those sponsored by iwine.jp), this had decent food catered by two restaurants that share the building, Indigo and Aotea Rangi.
The wines were mostly from Spain and South America, but it was possible to enjoy a little bit of everything, both Old World and New. At 6500 yen a good deal overall, and we were able to discover some new wines and importers. Our favorites tables that evening included those for ZAS!, Yuyay and Hotei Wines.
