CAVO - Petit Bar a Vins / French Cuisine

"A little French touch in the heart of Ebisu"

I thought i was the last person in Tokyo to discover this terrific little wine bar in Ebisu - but I was surprised to find that nobody has posted a review on Vino Tokyo. It seems  trendy to open standing wine bars in Ebisu and Shibuya these days. Cavo is definitely one of the better ones, and my personal favourite. It is independently owned and operated by a French guy - the French flair and charm definitely adds to the atmosphere and ambience. It is a very different vibe from the chain wine bars that are springing up around Tokyo. Cavo specializes in French wines and French "tapas". They also serve delicious Galettes (buckwheat crepes).

It is a very relaxed place and while the owner and staff know their French wines, they are definitely not wine snobs - you are quite welcome to order a beer, a cocktail or a glass of sangria for example. The sangria is excellent - the best I have had in Tokyo. What I like most about Cavo is that it attracts a good mixed crowd of Japanese and "foreign" customers, and you always end up meeting new people. It is a very friendly place and somewhere that people can feel comfortable turning up to on their own.

It is also open very late - which I never really appreciated until just last week, when I was asked to leave a Shibuya wine bar before midnight. Cavo is in the Roob6 Building - the home of the British pub "What the Dickens". Take the West exit at JR Ebisu, look for KFC on Komazawa dori and walk in two blocks from Komazawa dori. Cavo is at street level and usually has two large wine barrels outside the front door.

I won't go there again

An average wine bar in Ebisu. Good selection of mostly french wines, unfortunately not the best ones... Food is not bad, the problem is the bad ventilation system, you will smell of food and cigarette smoke if you spend more than 10 minutes inside. I also saw once the owner getting mad at a guy who just happened to be perusing one of his samples on the wall and kicked him out violently... I won't go there again.

A nice find in Ebisu

Dropped in to this place last week after seeing the listing here. Overall quite impressed! 5-6 reds and whites by the class, with almost all of them from France, including a number of interesting VDP wines from down South. The food menu mostly consists of tapas-style dishes and galettes, and everything I ordered was good. The ground-floor venue is long and narrow, and was mostly full for the time I was there (10-12 PM). As you might expect from a standing wine bar in Ebisu there was good mixed of Japanese and foreigners, with French dominating the latter group. The people were all friendly and place is cozy and relaxed. I'll be going back for sure.
